Early Life

Alice May Wilton was born on April 23, 1863, to Henry Columbus Wilton and Martha (Craig) Wilton in Macoupin, Illinois. Martha was 17 years old. Henry served in the American Civil War with Company K of the 30th Illinois Infantry. He was killed in the Battle of Atlanta on July 24, 1864. Alice was 3 years old when her mother, Martha, married Charles Frederick Christenot on May 9, 1866. They traveled to Union City in Alder Gulch, Madison County, Montana, with the 52-wagon oxen train of the Montana Gold and Silver Mining Company. They started in Nebraska City, Nebraska, and followed the Bozeman Trail to arrive in Virginia City, Montana, on October 6, 1866.

Marriage to C.D. Newbary

Alice married Curtis Daniel (C.D.) Newbary on January 18, 1877, at Adobetown, a mining camp close to Virginia City, Montana. She was 14 years old and he was 28 years old. C.D. was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, on October 21, 1849, and had come to Virginia City in 1865, at the age of 15.

Curtis and Alice lived on a ranch on Ruby Creek, then known as Stinking Water. He was a manager for the S.R. Buford Horse and Cattle Company, which ran both horses and cattle. The horses numbered close to 500 head. They lived on the ranch for 15 years.

During their time at the ranch, they had six chidren. Their first child, Catherine, died in infancy, in 1877.

Later Life

Alice May (Wilton) Newbary died of puerperal fever, a uterine infection, on March 22, 1889, just seventeen days after the birth of Alice Cecelia Newbary. She was 26 years old. Of her eight half-siblings, Hattie, the eldest, was 22, and Clemma, the youngest, was 4 years old when Alice died. She died at Ruby Valley and is buried at Nevada City Cemetery, Madison County, Montana.
